Vusi Mahlasela - The Voice of South Africa

Date & Time: Sunday February 12, 8:00pm

Venue: Canadian Memorial Church (15th Ave, at Burrard St., Vancouver)

"Vusi Mahlasela sings as a bird does: in total response to being alive. Music was at the heart of the struggle for freedom; Vusi was there. Music is at the heart of reconstruction; Vusi's music is here to stir and delight us. He is a national treasure." -Nadine Gordimer, 1991 Nobel Prize winner

Featured in the film Amandla! - A Revolution in four-Part Harmony, alongside other great South African artists such as Miriam Makeba and others, Vusi Mahlasela became a well-known voice of the South African people, both as a poet and as a singer during the years leading up to the end of Apartheid. An accomplished guitarist, percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader and performer, Vusi now enjoys an ever-growing following that spans worldwide. In this solo concert, he will perform from his 17-year repertoire of music and compositions.

Tickets $23/$18 in advance; $25 at the door. Available at Highlife (1317 Commercial Drive, 604-257-6964), Zulu Records (1972 West 4th Ave., 604-738-3232) or online at
