Thanks everyone!

We bought our plane tickets today. We're leaving on the 8th November to Toronto. We'll be staying with family for a couple of months before we can stand on our own feet.

We're getting real excited now and are looking forward to the new life journey we're about to embark.

Hi all,

An update of our timeline - looks like CHC in Pretoria is improving as well as the medical processing times.

Our timeline:

Late December 2001 - Application sent to CHC with payment

Late January 2002 - get acknowledgement of submission letter and receipt together with file number (receipt dated 31/12/2001)

e-client status reads - started processing on 2 January 2002

Wait and wait and wait...

May 2003 Got a bit stressed with the fiasco surrounding the new (then) minimum points requirement of 75 - I had 73 and hit an all time low. After coming to my senses my wife (Paula) and I enrolled in a French level 1 course with Alliance Francais here in Durban. Paula found this a breeze (she did French as a matric subject in high school), I however, had to start from scratch. I never knew verbs could be conjugated in so many ways!! ;) Anyway shortly afterwards the good news came through and the new minimum was now 67 but we continued with the course and submitted our certificates to update our files.

Wait and wait and wait...

End June 2004 - phone CHC and get news that they are currently busy with file and will contact us shortly

10 July 2004 - CHC phones and says all is in order letter is ready with medical forms please collect!!

Mid July 2004 - the family gets hit by the flu bug. Husband manages to stay healthy and nurse a wife an 3 kids back to health - this delays our medicals and we manage to get a booking for 3 August.

3 August - go for medicals all is well but there is an apparent anomaly on Paula's chest X-ray which will require the opinion of a lung expert (both of us are confused as she is a non-smoker and has never had a lung complaint).

5 August - Paula sees a lung specialist (lucky break for us as there are very few lung specialists who can accomodate you on such a short notice). Turns out the x-ray is an anomaly and he gives Paula a clean bill of health.

10 August - follow up appointment at the Doc and he gets all the paperwork ready - We pay the doctor the courier fee as you are no longer allowed to do it yourself.

16 August - the receptionist from the doctors rooms phone us and asks us when we are paying the courier fee  we produce the the receipt number and she apologises profusely. Another down point but we are just as much to blame as we did not follow up getting the waybill number etc.

18 August - Medical forms arrive in Nairobi.

8 September - Letter arrives asking us to send photos and Passports (letter dated 1 September - this may be a record for medicals being processed and results being sent back to Pretoria - must have been less than 12 days. I challenge anyone to equal or better that ;) )

10 September - Had a few attempts for sets of photos done with 2 different 1 hour photo labs - they all have this new software and in both cases completely ignored the form I took them say it was all on this new digital software. Needless to say they produced large 50 mm x 50 mm photos and not the 45 mm x 35 mm as required. They swallowed their pride and eventually gave us what we wanted.

We courier our passports off tomorrow and can't wait!!

Also our ECAS has been updated to read "Decision Made" and it also state that they have received our medical results and that we will be contacted shortly.

In the mean time it looks like we fly out on the 31 October (will also confirm tomorrow) and it looks like our final resting place will be Ottawa. I have some very good job prospects over there but will keep everyone posted.

Gary and Paula

For folks wondering what just happened to the two independent timelines from Angela and Steve, on the one hand, and Gary and Paula on the other.......we have created a home for all the immigration time lines and have consolidated them all into one place where folks can compare with their own timelines. I trust the various members who responded to the posts of the two families are OK with me editing their own posts so that the names of the target families are shown.

Congratulations Bianca. That's pretty incredible. Do you have any notion as to why it went so fast, when others have typically been waiting since late 2001?

Thanks for all the good wishes guys!

Harry - I've got no idea why it went so fast. We were really shocked, as we thought we still had about a year to go! We also had a little baby since applying, and haven't added her to the application as yet (thinking we had time...... ) Anyway - busy sorting that out.

The only thing I can think of - my friend reminded me that the CHC only moves the date foward when they have finished with ALL the cases that applied during that month. I also think ours' was an 'easy' application, my husband had more than enough points, and no 'funnies' anywhere. Perhaps the Lord just smiled on us!

Keep well!

Hi any prospective immigrants to Canada,

I received a job offer in the beginning of December 2002, Job Validation by the end of that month, submitted our family of 5's application for Permanent Residence (PR) on January 28, 2003 at Pretoria's Canadian High Commission.

I then heard I need a language test at IELTS (International English Language Testing System) before the application could be processed. The test was on March 7, 2003, making the starting day for our PR application March 18, 2003.

The medical examination was not until the end of September (23rd) 2004, and we could only leave South Africa by January 28, 2004. It felt extremely long, but on the long run, it wasn't that bad.

Now we have Permanent Residence, and we don't resent the long wait, because our kids can work for an extra income, as well as my wife.

We are enjoying Canada, except for the mosquitoes in summer and the extreme cold in winter. But the peace is wonderful, and the cold weather may be why nobody wants to fight for this part of the world, making life less stressful over here.

Good luck for anyone aspiring for Canada!

Bianca that is such exciting news. I am really thrilled for you.

I have always seen your application as a reference point to start getting excited about ours. What I'm trying to say is tht until I saw a message saying you had seen action their was no point in even starting to wonder about ours. We submitted exactly a year after you.

Is there anyone out there who applied between January 2002, official CHC timeline, and January 2003, Tracey and Bianca's timeline, who has not heard anything yet?

At last the four-year wait is over. Well, almost.

We received notice Aug 31 from the Canadian Embassy in Manila that our visa is ready for issuance. They requested to send thru courier our passports and new immigration photos.

And there's a 20-day wait period to get back our passports with the stamped visa. Well, the packing frenzy is now on. WE made flight reservations thru China Airlines and hopefully we will arrive in Vancouver November 6.
