This post will be updated from time to time with useful links for news from South Africa:

  • News
    • IOL - the biggest news, classifieds and info site on the Web in South Africa (if you don't want to pay news24 for news!)
    • News24 - the pre-eminent news resource on South Africa on the World Wide Web (certain areas charge a membership fee though!)

The 2004 South African Budget "at a glance" may be found here. You'll need Acrobat Reader to read the document.

Engineering (and other) News:

http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/eng/news/today/

Property/Development News

http://www.sapoaonline.co.za/news/default.aspx

Some good links for news (these are government-based websites):

http://www.southafrica.info

http://www.joburg.org.za

http://www.capegateway.gov.za (not really news, but gives updates on projects and services)

Most other cities also have improved websites now. Durban just relaunched theirs ( http://www.durban.gov.za ), Pretoria is supposed to be getting a new one soon and Cape Town's is still rather sad.

Not a news website, but is a forum focused on developments in South African cities. One of the members of this forum has also posted some amazing photos of Cape Town and recent developments there:

http://skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php...?s=&forumid=378

I also listed a bunch of website links on various projects way back, so here are a few of them again and some new ones:

http://www.gautrain.co.za

http://www.blueiq.co.za (recently relaunched)

http://www.newtown.co.za

http://www.jda.org.za

http://www.constitutionhill.co.za/

http://www.sacities.net

I'll come back (hopefully) in a week or two to add descriptions to all these links.

Hendie, feel free to edit/move these if you feel they are a bit off the topic of news.

If you want a South African "... outlet for musings, observations and futureneering from the company helping you to transition into the connection economy", Tomorrowtoday.biz is quite a handy and thoughtful website. It is also very positive about new developments in South Africa.

The best link for SA news is the Mail and Guardian website www.mg.co.za

News24 is sensationalist and certainly not the most reliable and critical news for South Africa (much like reading the YOU Magazine). The user comments on News24 are mostly racist and nasty.

The Mail and Guardian has very good Thought Leader articles as well as http://www.amabhungane.co.za articles which is the Mail and Guardian Centre for Investigative Journalism. Here you would probably find the most accurate news for SA.
