Any Electricians Here?

Recommended Posts

TammiM

Hi guys,

Just wanted to find out if there are any electricians here that have been been through the process.

So my husband is qualified ,worked for himself for over 10 years, but now we have been told that he might have  to go to the Ontario College to get a certificate equivalent of his qualification. This was said by my brother in Canada, he is not totally sure. Did anyone else have to do this? We have one IELTS and he needs a certificate of his qualification so that he can apply?

According to the Electrical contractors association of Ontario, An individual would have to become certified with the Province of Ontario by successfully challenging the Certificate of Qualification exam (https://www.ecao.org/become-an-electrician).

They provide a link to the following site which should describe how the process works.  https://www.ontario.ca/page/start-apprenticeship

So it seems, write the exam, and if you pass you need to do an "apprenticeship". His experience may count towards the hours, may not

Not sure if it will help but it is a start.

Good luck

Not sure if it was much help. But hopefully it will give you some guidance as to what to expect.

Definitely will need to get licensed here. It’s a very strictly controlled trade. Unfortunately  I don’t know if SA experience is recognized here in the certification process. There are definitely some significant differences in the way electrical work is done here versus SA. The whole construction methods are vastly different to SA which impacts many sub trades.

If you are heading towards BC, then take a look at BC's Industry Training Authority (ITA). I took the Inter-Provincial Red Seal exam as an Industrial Electrician in 2013 with their help. I'm assuming each province will have their own authority, but the IP Red Seal applies to the whole of Canada. With the addition of provincial "by-laws and regulations" to qualify for licensing in the respective province.

The trade qualification got me an EE invite and PR status under the Federal Skilled Trades stream.

PM me for more info, but remember this was in 2013. Things might be different now...
