Proof of Relationship

Hi Everybody

I'm in panic mode. My mother and myself are flying to Ottawa on the 2nd of August and I am busy with our Visitor Visa applications. There is a section that is required "Proof of Relationship". For me it's fine, I have my daughters Birth Certificate where I am the mother. My problem is that I cannot find my birth certificate that basically links her to my mother. We got 48 days and I don't now what to do for proof that my mother is actually my daughters grandmother.

Hi,

You could try to apply for your own unabridged birth certificate immediately, using a service that expedites the process (e.g. DocAssist). I'm pretty sure if you apply now you should get it with enough time to spare. Alternatively you could try to prove the relationship with photos, messages (emails, WhatsApps), shared address if you live/lived together, if you have or had the same surname you can indicate this using a marriage certificate(s) if applicable. Technically you would only still need to prove that you are your mother's daughter, since you've already proven that your are your daughter's mother. If you have a letter of invitation from your daughter with you and your mother's names on it it should be fine as well. Some people have to prove relationship to friends or common law partners who invited them in which case unabridged birth certificates won't play a role and then they would usually prove this in the ways that I mentioned above. As far as I can tell when we applied for Canadian visitor's visas in 2013 and 2015 we only gave the letter of invitation from my aunt and uncle together with a copy of their details (utility bill etc.), but no proof of relationship and we were approved without problems. We only proved this relationship with unabridged birth certificates when applying for Permanent Residence in 2016. Perhaps you can do some more research on other ways of proving relationships? Good luck, I'm sure it will all work out :-)
