Chartered Accountants conversion to CPA - Certificate in Theory of Accountancy

Recommended Posts

Jeanne-M

Hi,

I seem to have noticed that there are a few chartered accountants (CA(SA)) on the forum, and I was wondering whether you need your certificate in theory of accountancy evaluated by WES in order to do a conversion from CA(SA) to CPA? We're struggling to get any kind of academic transcript for my husband's CTA from UNISA to submit to WES.

Would appreciate any help!

Hi

I am in Calgary and busy with the conversion from CA to CPA. After getting the wrong information from various people at CPA Alberta, I finally got the application in after being assisted by one knowledgeable person. I had to complete an assessment form and submit my resume. They assessed this and said I qualify to register under the international programme. They sent me an application form to complete, asked for a letter of good standing to be emailed directly to them from SAICA and sent me details of the membership fees to be paid together with the application. All quite straightforward. I am now waiting to hear from them again. By the way - I also tried to get my academic transcripts from UNISA - no luck! I paid for the WES assessment, since CPA told me it needs to be done (they were wrong!), but managed to cancel and get a refund. Hope this helps.

Hi @Jeanne-M, do you already know where you are planning to settle?

Each province have their own CPA body and it's always best to just make sure of the requirements from them before submitting anything for assessments.

Thanks, @KarinS! That helps a lot! We'll just go with the academic transcripts we've been able to get hold of for his accounting honours degree then and not worry too much about the CTA.

@MaryJane, we're hoping to settle in Ontario, because it seems that it will probably be easiest for my husband to find a job somewhere there (hopefully Ottawa). We'll look into Ontario's CPA requirements, thank you!

Hi Jeanne-M

I am in a similar boat to you guys. I just completed my CIMA qualification and looking to convert my CMA designation to CPA.

When I read through the requirements, it does not specify that you need any transcripts evaluated by WES, however it does mention that you need a degree which is recognised by CPA Ontario, so I'm thinking perhaps you just need to send the WES evaluation for your degree only which you would have already done when applying for your PR visa.

If you have any questions you can also email them at Customer Service <CustomerService@cpaontario.ca>

I'm also contemplating whether I should apply for CPA now or whether I should wait to get my PR approved or even wait to go to Canada first because I'm not sure where about in Canada I will end up just yet? I do know that if you become a member of CPA Ontario and you then move to BC, you will need to get your CPA transition done from one province to the other.

Just as a matter of interest, I am also thinking of moving to Ontario (Toronto) as I feel this will provide the best opportunity for me to find an Accounting related job, I have also sent my CV to quite a few places and applied to several companies on the Job Bank without any response at all. I was wondering if there is any advice or tips you could offer me to help find a job? Do you know of any recruitment agencies that specialise in placement for foreigners perhaps?

I have enough money to last me bot 3 months max in Toronto without job, if I still don't get anything it's going to be very hard to survive.

Thanks.

Wow, you just gave me a look into my own future.

I'm on the verge of completing CIMA and going pretty much the exact same route.

Good stuff buddy

Maybe we will meet up in Toronto then lol

Yes, maybe we will.

Re CIMA: Doing P3 in April and ICS in May, then I'm done. Practical experience satisfied.

Re PR: IELTS in April and currently busy with WES, so I haven't even entered the EE pool yet

Good luck with the job hunt and as far as I can gather you really need to tailor/specialize that Resume (forget about the CV format) to the Canadian market before you can have a real hope of success.

Hi @Joo$y

Thanks for the helpful info.

From what I've read on this forum and elsewhere it seems unlikely that you will be able to find work from South Africa, unless you're a specialist with sought-after skills. There are a number of threads around the forum which discuss the challenges of finding a job. We have decided not to put too much effort into job hunting or my husband's CA-CPA conversion until our PR application is well on its way, (which is far from being the case...) We're still waiting to receive our ECA's from WES.

These are some of the recruitment agencies I have found so far which may or may not be helpful:

http://www.michaelpage.ca/our-expertise/finance-and-accounting-recruitment

http://www.hays.ca/enhance-your-career/non-designated-accounting-jobs/

I don't know if there is such a thing as a recruitment agency that specialises in job placements for foreigners. It seems unlikely.

Read here re looking for job in Toronto for Accountants -

And I will confirm @Jeanne-M statement, as best I know, there is no recruitment agency that specialises in job placements for foreign accountants. There are just too many accountants available here.

@MaryJane

This is something that remains concerning to me. I've heard that the job markets for accountants in both Toronto and Vancouver (even Alberta) are not looking rosy. Where to go?

(Sorry - seems I had a technical glitch and only part of the msg went up)

Many many CA(SA)'s and CIMA's :D

My apologies if this is slightly off topic -  but on the conversion from CA(SA) to CPA - if you do this in SA would this perhaps help add to your CRS points? As instead of having a "four year bachelors degree" you'd be able to claim a masters degree or equivalent? I have my CA(SA) and have just started CIMA - still a while to go thou.

I'm not sure if anyone's been lucky enough to receive a letter of interest from Ontario for the 2016 year as of yet - I am now waiting anxiousl

Internet issues

Think Global Recruitment does deal with international accountants although they do tend to look for specific skills - especially audit.

It's not that it's not rosy....it's that there's just too many competition.

Jobs are plenty. It's getting noticed and hired that's really the issue. If you're an employer, how do you weed through 300+ applicants?

Yep, that is another Canadian paradigm shift. We are so used to skills being in short supply in SA, it takes a while to realize Canada has a surplus of skilled people in most disciplines.

I converted my Ca (SA) to the Canadian CA not Ontario.   It was super easy.  Just got a letter of good standing from SAICA. I did an easy online conversion course and got the CPA designation.  If you want to practice in an audit firm, then u need too do the CARE exams

Hi there

Id like to know the same as you. Didn't get board exams assessed as I understand professional qualifications cant be assessed therefore only did up to and including cta 1 and 2.

But would be great to add board exams as a masters to be able to add to the points!

Hi Tracey

Have a nice day.
