Heading to Oakville to be exact :) My brother has been living there now for the past 7 years. We'll be living with them until we are on our feet :D

Hey guys. Don't want to start a new thread so I thought I'd quickly ask here.

In terms of my bank accounts and tax, should I settle these affairs while I'm here or can I do it from Canada? I still want my tax return for this year (March 2015 - February 2016) as I get quite a bit back for my medical aid.

I've booked a one way ticket to Toronto. Will they require a tax clearance certificate or will I get stopped at all if I don't have one? Just some background info. I don't have any assets in SA (no life insurance policies or anything like that as that was all handled by company and when I resign it falls away). I don't have any pension plan or anything like that here as well. I'll literally be starting fresh in Canada.

For the bank account, if your intention is to transfer all your money and close the bank account once you arrive here then I suppose you would need to arrange something with the bank to do that. Banks have a funny way of suddenly not listening especially if they hear "closing the account".

For tax, if you are not financially emigrating, then you can just continue filing taxes online. If you are, then....that's a whole lot of info for another thread. Search the forum for financial emigration under Money thread. Loads and loads of pages. I don't think we should hijack this thread.

You don't need to have a tax clearance certificate when you land. There are circumstances where you'll need one prior to landing, especially if it involves transferring big chunk of monies across and/or financially emigrating. I've never heard the Canadian authorities looking for a SARS tax clearance at landing.

I do think we should break this away from this thread. I think a lot of people can tell you about the bank and tax situation as there are many variables. This is interesting and possibly a very long thread.

Cool thanks MaryJane. Been checking out the money forum. Lots of info and my brain is now foggy.

I hope everyone from the 2015 group gets PR soon :)

Any guesses on when the next draw will be...?

From what I gather they happen on Wednesday and quite often 2 in a month. I also know there was one earlier in September.

We only get our IELTS results this Friday, so hopeful that the next draw will be on 27 September... ;)
