Vancouver/Burnaby meetup

Recommended Posts

I'm testing the waters to see if there are South Africans who would like to get together for a group meetup in the Vancouver/Burnaby area. Many of the SACanada socials seem to be held out in the further outlying suburbs and towns so I thought a chance to have a social gathering in a more central location could appeal to many.

I'd like to propose the Bread Garden in Metrotown - it's close to the Skytrain so will be easy for people to reach. As for the date, perhaps a Wednesday around 7:00 p.m. No particular agenda: just socialising and sharing info... and a chance for some to speak the Afrikaans that they miss (that's my husband, for sure).

Open to any and all suggestions regarding time/date/location/etc. Please post your thoughts on the forum so that we can judge interest.

Grace,

As someone who often organizers these types of events, I can say that the response will be interesting to see.

The last function I held in Burnaby 3 years ago, had 3 people attend. Even Safari Pies (the SA store in Burnaby) only get their regulars out and that is with myself and several other folks advertising AND a lucky draw. They get a few extra folks, but not nearly the amount that COULD be supportive. In February I had a function in Vancouver and only 6 people were there. Although it was GREAT FUN, I was disappointed.

I host functions where I think the folks will attend (at least where I have had success in that area). I get very little feed back when it comes to requests of what type of event and where folks would like to have the functions. Recently someone suggested a Fancy Dress/Costume Party - BUT not at Halloween time. This could be something fun.

For now I have a Mother's Day Dinner Roast organized in White Rock (although that may be canceled).

Father's day lunch in North Vancouver, The Annual Picnic in the Park and Gourmet Potjie Competition in Langley.

I am also planning a Lamb Spit (Rotisarrie) for Thanksgiving. I am sure some Southern Africans would prefer LAmb to Turkey.

At Christmas I usually organize a function close to my home as I transport all my own catering equipment to the function.

I have also in the past offered a ride to folks to just try to get them out to the events. So far the only two events that are hugely sucessful is the Picnic and Christmas Dinner.

If hubby wants to attend something Afrikaans, there is a Church in White Rock, and they are planning for a Church Bazaar in June. He is sure to meet many Afrikaans speaking folks there. Or he can just come online and chat here too.

IF your function happens, I will gladly advertise it in the monthly newsletters that I send out. All I can really add is, "Good Luck with it!!"

Yes some sort of get together close to Metro town would be nice. The Bread Basket is ideal to share a cup of coffee and a sammy.

Hi Grace,

Yvonne & I will join you at Metrotown - we will probably wear our famous leopard t shirts! 7PM on Wednesday at the Bread Basket is fine for us.

The first meetup this year for South Africans in Vancouver/Burnaby will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 May.

Venue: Bread Garden, 4575 Central Blvd. in Metrotown (near the Zellers entrance if you're parking at Metrotown or just a few minutes walk from Patterson Station if you're coming in on the Skytrain).

There will be no specific agenda - it's an opportunity to discuss all things Canada and South Africa as well as share tips, info, experiences, etc.

Look forward to seeing you there! :holy:

And if you live outside of Vancouver or Burnaby, please feel free to join us.

Hi all,

The Bread Garden is between Metrotown station and Royal Oak station. Patterson station is further away - after Metrotown station.

Andy is right about the Bread Garden being between Metrotown and Royal Oak Stations - sorry about the confusion.

Look forward to seeing you all there at 7:00 p.m. today!

Grace,

What was the turnout like at the Bread Garden last week? As I mentioned in my pm, I had a prior function on and so was unable to attend. Hope it was a success.

Cheers

We had a great turnout of 6 people - just the right size for a social evening without getting lost in a crowd!

Good for you!

That's the best visiting in any case. :D

At least you really get to know people then.
