Hi there all you ex-cricketers and SA doctors

My son of 21 experienced discomfort in his shoulder last summer while bowling. Went to the doctor and had the following treatment over the last 10 months: Ibuprofen / hot and cold pads / cortisone injection /physio /x-ray and finally an MRI. Got the feedback today and it turns out that it is not the rotator cuff that is injured but the PARTIAL DETACHMENT OF THE INFERIOR GLENOHUMERAL LIGAMENT LABRAL COMPLEX. According to the doc surgery is not a common option and that the best treatment would be to strengthen surrounding muscles etc. The doc suggested we see a shoulder specialist in Vancouver which we will do ( apparently there is a 10-12 month wait for an appointment). In the meantime is there anyone out there who can help with advice.

I would go and see a Sports Physiotherapist. Who specializes in this treatment. He is in Cloverdale and has treated some big names in South African sport. I realize you are in Kelowna but with an injury like that you don't want to mess around with it. If you need the Physio's name & number PM me.

Interesting article on baseball players and their shoulder injuries at : http://www.hughston.com/hha/a_16_1_1.htm
May find some helpful advice for your son.
Hope he gets to play cricket again, soon! smile.gif

Hi Vinceb
I have looked it up, thanks. Are you a doc or have you experienced this injury? Sounds as if my son will be better off training himself to bowl left handed

You're welcome.

I am a doctor but on the diagnostic side of medicine, suggest that you keep the appointment with the orthopedic surgeon.

Kyk ook uit vir 'n bio-kinetikus -- dit is die regte tipe persoon om die spiere op te bou --- baie kere sal jy hulle ook verbonde aan 'n universiteit kry.

Update to this subject - my son eventually got to see a shoulder specialist who put him on the famous "wait list". My son diarised monthly calls to check on his status on the list with no luck until Friday. He is scheduled for surgery on 7 December. ( It turns out that the main cause of the problem is a fairly large bone chip lodged between the bone and shoulder socket - once that is removed the doc will check the ligaments)

Hold thumbs that he will be back playing cricket next summer - nearly drove us all nuts because he couldn't bowl the last 2 summers and batting he could only block !

My Mom (70 Years old) had a very bad fall about 5 years ago and also ended up with large bone chip that caused her plenty of discomfort. She went in for an operation to have the bone chip removed and had her right arm strapped for about six weeks after the operation. She fully recovered and says her shoulder has never felt better.

I trust this puts you mind a little at ease. Best wishes with your son's operation and bid him a speedy recovery.
