We have many South African young people living here in Canada who want to know if they would qualify for a Working Holiday Visa for the UK.

If you are between the ages of 17 and 30 and you are either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, you can apply. This visa is issued only once to you and it is valid for 24 months. You can either stay in the UK for the full period, or come and go for shorter periods.

The feedback we get from people returning from the UK is very positive! The summer holiday is an excellent opportunity for you and we have a large variety of jobs available.

Thank you once again for your support!

I just wanted to add that you can only work for 12 months out of the 24 months, am I right? Which is fine, 'cause you're on holiday anyways right!?

We (my fiance and I) are planning on going to the UK, on a Working Holiday Visa while we're waiting on an answer from the Canadian Government.

I heard from another agency that you can work the full 24 months of your stay.Would like some clarity on this issue, please? We are planning on travelling to other European countries for short breaks, but would prefer working more than playing. So, can we work for longer than 12 months?

Hi livvie,

This is what I heard when I was applying, maybe it's changed?

The rule with the working-holiday visa is that you're only supposed to work for half the time and holiday for the other half. But nobody I know has ever stuck to that rule and there is nobody to enforce it or check on it. Friends of ours had gone over to the UK on the 2 year visa and they both got teaching positions, which are full-time jobs. They did manage to get one of the schools to arrange for a work permit for them, so they are still there, but most people find a job and stay with that company for the 2 years they are there. And if you're lucky the company would want to keep you and they will arrange for a work visa.

Thanx everyone.I suppose that's what the agency meant by working the full 24 months.

We are in the UK nearly 5 years. We came on a working holiday visa and we worked the whole 2 years and we never had a problem. You get some agencies, that after 1 year they don't want to employ you. It all depends, what work you want to do. Hope this helps.

I did this in 1999 and would highly recommend it as a way to gain independence, experience and earn some money. I just want to add that if you are a Canadian citizen, you also qualify for similar programs all over Europe eg: Ireland, Germany, which you don't qualify for as a South African.
