We drove down to Victoria on Saturday to attend the CF tattoo, honouring the 90th anniversary of Vemy Ridge. Our daughter is in the air force cadets, and is a member of their drill team which took part in the tattoo. Anyway, we went early and drove around Saanich, and Esquimalt (where the Navy is headquartered). It is really a beautiful area with lovely parks, beaches, and gorgeous views, and lovely homes. Probably waaayyy out of our reach, but still nice to look at. The university has a beautiful campus too. Here are a few photos I took.

Nice pics. That's an awful lot of driftwood on that first pic. Would that still be the remains of the stormy winter?

No Matisse, that's actualy how most of the beaches look on the Island. Lumber is transported by water and some get loose. It's quite a sight to see this rugby field wide group of logs being dragged by 'n diminutive little tugboat.

Many houses are heated by these logs. People merely go down to the beach and cut up a few for their furnaces.

Beautiful pictures, Debbie! We live in a lovely place.

Interesting, thank you for the clarification. I would love to visit the Island, it looks so beautiful. Maybe someday.

By tugboat? What happened to all those hardy, fleet-footed loggers that one would see in the movies, standing on the logs and pushing them down the river with long poles? biggrin.gif wink.gif

Debbie, those pictures were lovely. Thanks for sharing.

My partner and I were in Victoria last year and fell in love with the place. Most of the house prices in Victoria itself are prohibitive, yet Sooke, which is about half an hour from Victoria proper, has quite a lot of affordable property. The only thing I can attribute this to is the snob factor, that Sooke is somehow looked down on as place to live, and consequently the houses are substantially cheaper. Sydney by the Sea is also about half an hour from Victoria proper, but the house prices are comparitive to those in Royal View.

I can't see anything wrong with living in Sooke. Maybe someone who lives in Victoria can shed a little light on this discrepency. blink.gif
